Open grasslands predominate on the coastal shelf, while Bishop pine and Douglas-fir occupy the upland slopes. Stands of second-growth redwood can be found in the protected hollows and ravines. The wildlife of Fort Ross consists of a wide spectrum of land animals, birds, and marine life. Land animals common to the area include the bobcat, gray fox, raccoon, black-tailed deer, brush rabbit, ground squirrel, pocket gopher, broad handed mole, and black-tailed hare. Built by Charmian London in 1919-26, this house is similar to Wolf House in some ways - the Spanish-style roof tiles and walls of field stone, for example - but it is much smaller and more formal. Charmian lived here whenever she was not traveling abroad or staying with relatives. After her death in 1955 at the age of 84, her will directed that the house be used as a memorial to Jack London and as a museum that would house the London collection of photographs and exhibits about the life and adventures of the world-famous author. It also contains a park visitor center where you can purchase books by and about Jack London.

This 317-acre state reserve is located directly adjacent to Salt Point and features a beautiful second-growth redwood forest mixed with Douglas firs, grand firs, tanoaks, and many rhododendrons. Each May the green of the forest is punctuated by patches of pink as these rhododendrons burst into bloom. The wealth of rhododendrons is a direct result of normal plant succession patterns following a severe fire that once occurred here. Today, the regenerated forest is gradually overwhelming the rhododendrons. There are five miles of hiking trails through the quiet forest and a number of picturesque bridges over fern-filled canyons made by the seasonal streams that abound in this region each winter.
